The City of Rodez

The old hilltop town is dominated by the redstone cathedral to Notre-Dame-de-Rodez which, with its 87-metre red sandstone bell tower, is visible for miles around. No matter which direction you approach Rodez, follow signs to centre ville and youâll find yourself in the large cobbled central square, the Place d'Armes, looking up at the cathedral's Gothic belfry. The building, famous for the wooden choir stalls carved in 1468 by Andre Sulpice, is impressively spacious inside. Behind the cathedral, a network of narrow traffic free passages connect the Place de Bourg, the Place de la Cite, the Place de la Mairie and the Place Reynaldi.
With specialist shops and boutiques, these streets are a shoppers paradise. Clothes and fashion boutiques for all ages, chocolatiers, milliners, leather and handbags, cheese, fishmongers, butchers, coffee, booksellers, fruit and vegetables, cutlery, bakers and patissiers. If you yearn for the days before supermarkets and department stores, you'll find these streets and passages are perfect for a leisurely stroll while giving your credit card a work-out.
Just around the corner in the Place Clemenceau is the modern and contemporary arts museum, the Musee Denys Puech, named after the acclaimed sculptor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1884.
Alongside the Avenue Victor Hugo, the main public park, the Parc Forail, hosts a number of events during the year, most notably the Estivada, an international celebration of Occitan culture, language and music.
Sports of all kinds are well catered for in Rodez and the 18-hole championship golf course, which affords superb views of Rodez and the surrounding countryside, is an enjoyable layout for players of all standards.
